PROBLEM Multiple missing teeth present a more difficult situation than a single missing tooth. Many times the reason multiple teeth are lost is the failure of a prior three- unit bridge that replaced a single tooth. It is common to have decay occur in the supporting teeth of an existing bridge leading to the loss of one or both supporting teeth. If a still longer bridge is made to replace multiple teeth, too much pressure is placed on the new supporting teeth resulting in premature failure. TREATMENT OPTIONS 1. Multiple implants to support individual tooth replacements is the strongest solution. Shorter bridge on multiple implants can also work if the implants are long enough. 2. A long span bridge is a fixed type treatment but may not last very long due to increased pressure on the supporting teeth. 3. A removable partial denture is a removable solution but has all the limitations of a removable appliance. It is not very comfortable and can be embarrassing. |
